How We Work
Learn how technology increases our efficiency and reduces our carbon footprint. Plus how we reach out to our communities.
From major cities to remote villages, we collect and process thousands of tons of waste every day.
To maximise efï¬ciency—and reduce our carbon footprint—we operate from different sites using several transfer stations, treatment plants and landfill sites.
This avoids unnecessary waste transportation across cities. Additionally, in the near future we will switch to gas, hybrid and/or bio-fuel engines to reduce our own engine emissions.
Our fleet management system combines GPS with other monitoring devices which perform route comparisons, driver evaluations and real-time checks of the vehicles.
Our vehicle maintenance unit provides the extensive support demanded by tough 24/7 working conditions, handling preventative and corrective maintenance, body repair and complete overhaul activities.
We build strong ties with the communities we serve.
We regularly invite schools and university groups to our premises to show students the full scope of our activities, the benefits of recycling and how to preserve the environment.
To give something back to the communities we serve, we transform organic material into compost, an excellent soil enhancer, which we distribute to farmers at no cost.
Through averda Research—our centre for environmental research and testing—we monitor this programme to maintain the quality of our compost as a natural fertilizer.
Additionally, we launched door-to-door collection of recyclable materials from many institutions, distributing free colour-coded bags and bins to enable separation at source.
There are many small steps we can all take to live more responsibly. Through promoting environmental awareness, waste reduction and recycling, we aspire to embed a new way of living in our communities.
We’re launching many new initiatives in the coming months. Please check back soon.
Every day, we come face to face with the impact of human activity on our ecosystem.
To improve our efï¬ciency and reduce our own carbon footprint, we are committed to adopting industry best practices and technological innovations.
Our team of highly qualiï¬ed engineers and specialists conducts all services in compliance with ISO standards, working around the clock to provide the level of service clients have enjoyed for almost two decades.
Our in-house R&D team, averda Research, provides technical, scientiï¬c, and analytical services, including laboratory analysis; research and development techniques; consultancy related to solid waste systems; waste by-products, water and wastewater; agriculture and other environmental issues.
All analyses are executed according to the laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Assurance/Quality Control, and as per the ISO14001 Environmental Standards, best practices and governmental regulatory norms.
Our continuing success rests on the shoulders of our employees—truly our most valuable resource.
At averda, everyone has an equal opportunity to develop their skills and career. Moreover, we are committed to the well-being of our employees through our first-rate equipment and machinery, catering facilities and medical care.
Above all, we provide an environment where people can work with dignity and treat each other with respect.

Who We Are
We’ve come a long way. Now we’re taking the region’s environmental services sector into a sustainable future. Find out how.
Our chairman, Maysarah Sukkar, set up his first engineering company in Beirut in 1968.
Sukkar Engineering soon became a leading supplier of processing machinery for Lebanon’s food, cosmetics and consumer goods industries. Over the next twenty years, the company moved into Saudi Arabia and focused its core activities on waste management.
By 1992, Lebanon had begun to rebuild its infrastructure after fifteen years of civil war. The government turned to us for an integrated plan to solve unorganized waste collection.
We took swift action to restore the Mount Lebanon area and the capital to a waste-free state, providing a modern fleet and equipment and establishing high-tech facilities. Beirut is now one of the cleanest cities in the Middle East.
For the past ten years, we have built a truly integrated waste management business. Our original waste management companies, Sukleen and Sukomi, remain a core part of our operations and we continue to bring new companies into the averda family.
Today, averda far exceeds our chairman’s expectations all those decades ago. We are expanding rapidly throughout the Middle East and North Africa and aim to become the region’s leading environmental services company for both private and public sectors.
From simply keeping streets clean to raising awareness about the global impact of waste, averda always acts responsibly and with the greatest respect for our ecosystem.
We help societies keep pace with rising populations so they can grow naturally and sustainably.
The Middle East is growing at a tremendous pace. This is good for the development of each country, although such rapid growth carries a heavy risk—communities may create waste at an unsustainable rate.
Every community is its own ecosystem. But while nature takes care of its own waste—all elements return to the soil and the sea—manmade materials fall outside this natural scheme.
All the waste of modern life, from discarded packaging to products that have outlasted their usefulness, must be properly dealt with.
Our expertise and experience has led to new standards in the cleaning, collection, recovery and disposal of waste using environmentally sound practices.
We continually develop new technologies and refine our methods, adopting environmental best practices into our workflow process and exceeding global ‘duty of care’ requirements.
Our operations extend from Lebanon to Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates through the following averda companies.
Sukleen
Specialized in city cleaning services, Sukleen started in Beirut, but now covers the Greater Beirut area and most of Mount Lebanon, serving more than two million citizens.

This goal drives us to exceed our own standards. We will realize it through these strategies:
