Ekurhuleni opens two new mini waste disposal sites

Two new legal waste disposal sites have been opened by the City of Ekurhuleni. The mini disposal facilities in Leondale and Vosloorus, Southwest of Johannesburg, were introduced to minimise illegal dumping in the area and promote cleanliness in the community.The two sites were launched in November 2018 by Ekurhuleni member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for environment and waste management services, Ndosi Shongwe. He made note of the need to consider the future when using spaces for development during his speech at the opening.“We are gradually running out of space and need to do everything necessary to minimise the amount of waste reaching our disposal sites,” says Shongwe. “It is our wish that these facilities must serve as catalysts to promote local economic development activities, such as composting of waste,” he adds.

The facilities will serve their communities

These two new disposal facilities will receive waste from the residents in the immediate surrounding areas. Citizens can dispose of their bin bags and waste in one of the bulk waste containers on site.Certain waste items can be disposed of for free, including organic garden waste, wood, small amounts of rubble, paper, plastic, glass, metal and other recyclables. The two sites will be open seven days a week, including public holidays. They will not be open on Christmas Day.

Opening hours of the disposal sites

The opening hours vary, depending on the seasons. “Due to changing patterns of sunrise and sunset times, and the reduced visibility depending on the seasons, the operating hours for the two sites have been separated into two - winter (April to September) and summer (October to March),” explains Shongwe.Both disposal facilities will be open from 7am to 6pm in winter and from 7am to 7pm in summer.___Averda is a leading waste management provider with over 50 years of experience across three continents.
