Innovative wastewater treatment plant launched in Durban

Leading engineering and construction services group, Murray & Roberts, together with Organica Water, its European technology partner, has launched an Organica Water (“Organica”) Resource Recovery Demonstration Facility at eThekwini municipality's Verulam Wastewater Treatment Works.Organica is recognized as the world leader in providing localized solutions for the treatment and reuse of wastewater in cities and communities around the world. The wastewater treatment plant, which has the appearance of a botanical garden, is the first of its kind in South Africa. The plant eliminates unpleasant odours, produces 30% less sludge, uses 30% less energy and has a 50% to 75% smaller physical footprint than conventional wastewater treatment solutions. It does this by combining architecture, engineering, chemistry, utilizing active biofilms on plant and/or engineered root structures, and using fixed-bed activated sludge technology. This type of treatment facility demonstrates a huge leap in what is possible for South Africa going forward as it does not compromise the surrounding land and could therefore be located anywhere. The facility is essentially a water reclamation garden that stands as a symbol of sustainability. It is also much more cost effective, with up to 30% reduction in operational costs, as it requires smaller concrete structures, land and pipework. It is possible for older facilities to be upgraded and refitted with this technology and, as a result, the eThekweni municipality is keeping a close eye on the Organica facility and is considering investing in the technology for future upgrades in the local water infrastructure.___Averda is a leading waste management provider with over 50 years of experience across three continents.
