Nelson Mandela Bay to reduce litter and illegal dumping

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has set aside R40 million over the next financial year to clean up the city by tackling illegal dumping sites and high-litter areas. Dubbed the “Clean and Green Programme”, the municipality will be partnering with 43 cooperatives to improve waste collection and litter reduction. Over the next three years, the municipality will spend around R100 million on the programme, according to Nelson Mandela Bay municipal spokesperson Mthuanzi Mniki. This money will be used to pay the cooperatives and to educate residents about the importance of proper waste disposal practices. “The services rendered by the cooperatives will also assist the municipality in accessing some areas that are not easily accessible by waste collection vehicles. They will also assist the municipality with community awareness programmes, in addition to focusing on cleaning up illegal dumping sites and general litter picking on roadside areas,” Mniki explains.

Nelson Mandela Bay cooperatives create jobs

The Clean and Green Programme will boost job creation in Port Elizabeth and its surrounding communities. Each cooperative that will work alongside the municipality will employ between 10 and 15 people. Most of these cooperatives will also be led by women - something that the municipality is proud of.“This initiative is not only focusing on cleaning the city. We are also, for the first time, making a bold statement, as this administration, that previously disadvantaged people on the ground will benefit with a particular focus on women,” says Nelson Mandela Bay executive mayor Mongameli Bobani.The municipality is aiming for visible changes in litter and the restoration of public spaces through the programme. “We want to make sure that people do the work on the ground. There has to be visible change in our areas. Gone are the days when our people lived in filth that exposes their children to a health hazard,” says Mayoral Committee Member (MMC) for Public Health Yoliswa Pali.This waste clean-up initiative will help to restore Nelson Mandela Bay’s public spaces, especially open fields that are used as illegal dumping grounds.
