Western Cape leads national recycling efforts

With more and more people and organisations joining the fight against pollution and making innovative and concerted efforts to clean up the environment, a number of local individuals and companies have recently been lauded for their contributions. Currently, the Western Cape seems to be at the forefront of recycling initiatives in South Africa.National industry body, the PET Recycling Company (PETCO), recently unveiled its recycling champions. This follows the recent announcement of a six percent year-on-year increase in therecycling of PET plastic bottles. This list includes industry stakeholders whose recycling efforts are paying off, even at the grassroots level.

Western Cape leading PETCO’s list of recycling champions

PETCO announced that the Western Cape is leading its national list, with winners in nine categories. The list includes Jocelyn van der Ross from Franschhoek, who conquered unemployment and withstood three fires in order to create a successful recycling business.Rocco da Silva from Somerset West launched The Future Kids Club, which works to encourage young people in his region to take part in beach clean-ups every month. The Future Kids Club members have collected over 950kg of rubbish from a 400m stretch of beach in the area over the past 14 months.More Western Cape winners included Plastics SA environmental manager John Kieser, UCT academic Takunda Chitaka and the Hout Bay community project ‘Thrive’.
