The Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA) held its biennial awards on the 17 November 2022 for the KwaZulu-Natal region. The Awards recognises organisations going the extra mile to reduce their waste volumes.
Defy Appliances (Jacobs Branch), Toyota South Africa Manufacturing and Hirt & Carter South Africa were all first-time entrants to the awards and entered the Large Manufacturing Category (for companies employing more than 250 employees). All three companies were awarded gold certification.
The KZN Waste Management Awards are judged by waste management professionals and include on-site audits of the facilities, which analyse each organisation’s: management and organisation; training and motivation; cleaner production and waste minimisation initiatives; waste generation, classification, storage, transport & disposal; record keeping; communication, social responsibility; and visual observation.
Defy Appliances is the largest manufacturer and distributor of major domestic appliances in southern Africa. Defy Appliances, Jacobs Branch, was awarded a Gold 3* Certificate. The judging team were particularly impressed with the cleaner production processes in place, resource efficiencies and management of waste.
Toyota South Africa Manufacturing (TSAM) was awarded a Gold 4* Star Certificate. TSAM were commended by the judges on their efforts to monitor and address the impact of their products and operations on the environment. The company has introduced extended producer responsibility (EPR) requirements to their suppliers. These EPR requirements help to ensure that the parts and equipment they receive at their manufacturing plant have packaging that can either be recycled or returned to the supplier for reuse. TSAM also received the Silver Lining Certificate. Despite being subjected to severe adversity during the April 2022 floods, TSAM used the opportunity to test the Durban facility’s end-of-life vehicle management capability. They successfully depolluted and recycled over 4000 flood-damaged vehicles and vehicle components.
Hirt & Carter South Africa have been involved in retail branding for over 60 years. They received a Gold 5* Star Certificate and the Sustainable Workplace Certificate. The judges were impressed by Hirt & Carter’s overall management, cleaner production and waste minimisation initiatives. The company’s energy saving ethos and on-site waste reduction strategies have contributed to their building being rated by the Green Building Council of South Africa.
Averda is proud to be associated and partner with Defy Appliances (Jacobs Branch), TSAM and Hirt & Carter South Africa on their waste management and sustainability journey. We congratulate them on their well-deserved awards.
